We just collaborated with Madison Lane Interiors in Joplin to produce images for their billboard and website. Have you been to Madison Lane Interiors? OH MY. I lOVE THAT STORE!!

I'm the kind of person that loves original and "different" pretty things. Not different weird, but different in the sense of "not mass produced and therefore not available at Hobby Lobby or -gasp- Kirklands." And so I went to heaven the first time I went into Madison Lane. :) I found them last year, originally seeking a distinctive fabric for a set idea, and OH MY AGAIN. I went into sensory overload! Their beautiful custom fabric options are seemingly endless.

You'll have to visit them. They're located at 505 West 2nd street, in the most charming little building. Owners Amber and Pam are talented designers and (most importantly) friendly people. With access to lovely fabrics. :-)

My photograph of the lovely ladies of Charles Burt Realty made the cover for Show Me the Ozarks magazine!

McDonald County was featured in this issue, so there's also a lovely feature on myself, Jon and our trusty assistant Jack. Grab a copy... they're floating around in all sorts of places in the four-state area. Staff writer Jamie did such a great job of interviewing me and taking my gabby run-on sentences and making them sound like I'm a rather intelligent person. I read the article and wanted to book a Session with myself!

It's Not Too Late To Order Christmas Cards!

Calotype clients, panic not. Choose from one of these designs below, tell us what picture from a previous Portrait Session you would like to use, and tell us what you want to say. A simple "Merry Christmas from our family" is always tasteful, but if you want to say "Take that, peeps— our card is way cooler than yours," well, that's fine, too. Note: we'll change the color of the card to fit your picture, so yours will look truly custom.

Cards are double-sided, flat, and press-printed on 5x7-sized art matte heavy weight paper. Envelopes are included. They are 2.30 each and there is a minimum order of 24. They take about 8-10 days to process. True procrastinators can always send Happy New Year cards. :)

Mini Portrait Sessions are only available for one child at a time. Appointments are available every 10 minutes. Your child will be photographed on a simple yet elegant holiday set (shown in the pictures on this post) and you will view the images immediately. Fall color has exploded across the Ozarks! This Portrait Session is just from last Saturday, and I noticed on the drive to work this morning that the leaves have already intensified since then. They seem even more beautiful, set against the gray misty sky. I know it's been a rainy fall, but it's been great for pictures because I love gray, foggy light!

The Onstotts were photographed on the hill overlooking the studio. We carted the couch up there, yes, it's our studio prop, yes, you can bring your own if you're just dying to... :)

Note: We're booked solid until December, and we are starting to fill that month up. We're past the deadline of November 15th to get pictures back by Christmas, but if you've got adorable Christmas outfits for the kids, bring them in anyway. Last year we had several clients do New Year's Cards, instead of Christmas. Call us at 417.845.1151 to see what we still have available, or email me.

We've had several Preview Albums pass through the studio recently, but I managed to grab these two (both of seniors) and photograph them. The first one is a 7x10 size, in Black Pearl Brocade. The second one is a smaller 5x7 size, in Nehru Brocade.

The Preview Album and Album Treasury are our solution to the common dilemma of "I want them all!" They range from $349 to $1249 and are available in many different fabrics and colors.

Happy First Birthday, Jack.

Our sweet baby boy turned one on September 20th. We had a small birthday party for him on that day, but declared the entire California trip his "birthday trip."

We've been through a lot in his first year of life, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Jon and I were married eight years before he was born, and we wondered what it would be like to add a baby to our comfortable routine. Now we can't imagine what in the world we did before we had a baby (we must have been so boring!)

I try to thank God every day for my beautiful baby. He is healthy, he's intelligent, and he's sweet-natured. He gives good, slobbery kisses and heart-melting smiles.

He also models for his mommy. :) Below are his birthday pictures on the beach. The cold sand was only interesting for like, thirty seconds, and then he was done (see very last picture). I love that sad face. It's probably my favorite!

Happy Birthday, Jack. You're a very special little boy.

Insane, I know, but we booked two major events, Learnfest in Atlanta (a photographer's convention) and beach Portrait Sessions in California (always wanted to do that) during our busiest season. Hey, I'm a professional photographer, not a professional businesswoman. Not yet, anyway.

So we just had a whirlwind three weeks of nonstop learning and/or mental stimulation. Learnfest was so incredible that I'm really intimidated to try to explain it to you verbally, but you'll see its effects showing up in my work.

California? Well, I was ready to move there, but my reasonable husband and business partner reminded me that we have clients back here that love us, too, and besides, the cost of living is less. Oh, and Missouri's not bankrupt. BUT MISSOURI DOES NOT HAVE THE BEAUTIFUL COASTLINE THAT HAS CAPTURED MY HEART! Oh, sweet Avila beach. I miss thy foggy afternoons.

Yes, I plan to revisit California, and photograph again. But now we're back in Missouri, and the Ozarks will turn any moment into glorious fall color that will rival the coast anyday. I still have some space in October during the week if you want fall portraits. Pull the kids out early from school— shh, don't tell the principal.

How proud am I! Our canvas lab, Simply Canvas, chose to use Calotype Photography images for their new ad campaigns promoting their canvas clusters. They had asked me a while back for several images, and several weeks later when I opened the Professional Photographer magazine, there was handsome little Pierce, smiling back at me! All of the outfits I got for Jack were so absolutely cute, that I have to take his picture in all of them! Since his attention span is like, 30 seconds, this is probably going to take me about a week to photograph them all!

Calotype will be offering Portrait Sessions in California (!) September 23-30. The 23rd through 26th (Weds-Sat) we will be in the rural Riverdale area, and Sunday through Tuesday (27th-29th) we will be at Avila Beach.

BEACH SESSIONS. AWESOME. Children, families, pets, high-school seniors... here's your chance for Calotype photography at a beautiful location. We're not confined to the beach; the town of Avila is charming, and brimming with fodder for imaginative photography! Think: piers, inns, quaint restaurants, did I mention piers?? And of course, the BEACH.

Here's the scoop:

•Portrait Session fees start at $100 for 1-5 people.
•Pay the Portrait Session fee IN ADVANCE to book. We can accept any major credit card over the phone. Call 417.845.1151 to schedule your Session. We only have limited space.
•2-3 weeks after we return home, an online, private gallery will be uploaded with your previews. You will have two weeks to place your order.
•A minimum purchase of $350 is required. Tax and shipping are not included.
•Portrait Sessions will use natural light, so Sessions are available only during daylight hours. SUNSET WILL BE SO AWESOME. We've only got three of those at Avila, so first come, first served a delicious dose of golden California light. (We call it "magic hour".)

Although it often seems like we work more than we play, we play while we work so I guess everyday's a vacation...

But for real, Calotype will be closed Sunday through Sunday, August 2nd through August 9th, as Jon and I take off for some much needed family time with Jack. We will be traveling to Indiana to spend time with my family, and I will return energized and full of crazy new ideas to try on you, my willing victims.

We're in the middle of booking high-school senior Portrait Sessions (they look awesome in the summertime!) and we're already booking fall families. It's shaping up to be a busy fall and holiday Season, so if you're planning to be photographed by Calotype sometime during the remainder of this year, I would advise you call ahead and schedule. 417.845.1151. It's not uncommon for us to book two months out during the October-through-December rush.

I photographed my last kid for the sports-themed portrait display we're creating at All-Star Pizza in Anderson, MO. Now for the fun part: selecting which portrait from which child I will use. Fun, fun! Once the finished display is up, we'll post a photo on the blog so everyone can see.

Red Onion Espressoria in Joplin Opens Tuesday, June 16th!

And why am I excited? Well, smoked chicken dip immediately springs to mind. And stays there for a while.

I love smoked chicked dip. I wanted to name our first child after it, but we decided at the last minute that "Jack" would be easier for him to spell in kindergarten.

Putting the SCD aside for a moment, Calotype is so very, very proud to display BEAUTIFUL Canvas Gallery Wraps of their work all through the restaurant! One very large 40x60" Canvas and 4 smaller-but-still-self-confident 24x36" Canvases.

We photographed the original Red Onion in all its glory (4th and Virginia in historic downtown Joplin), and of course, since we're Calotype and PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE IS WHAT WE DO, these pictures were smattered with lovely people having a lovely time. There was smoked chicken dip involved, of course.

Then I designed lovely Canvas Gallery Wraps, our highest quality product at Calotype, using these pictures. I faded and antiqued the photos, using my Top Secret Fading and Antiquing Processes, then artfully arranged them with my new fave graphic— stripes— to create the masterpieces that now hang in the Red Onion Espressoria.

Stop by Tuesday to see, in person, what we created. (32nd & Indiana in Joplin.) And don't forget to order the Smoked Chicken Dip.

Calotype is Offering Free Portrait Sessions to McDonald County Kids!

You may have heard that All-Star Pizza in Anderson is reopening. New owner Travis Lewis has asked Calotype Photography to create a sports-themed photo display of local kids, so we're extending a special opportunity to McDonald County parents. Here's the scoop:

• Calotype is going to do free portrait Sessions for nine kids, throughout June.
• Must be from McDonald County.
• Kids can be any age, as long as they're playing some type of sport.
• We want kids to come dressed in their sports uniform, and bringing some type of sports equipment. We're looking for anything to do with football, basketball, baseball, etc.
• Parents must sign a model release, so Calotype can use their child's image for advertising at All-Star Pizza, and on our website, blog and Facebook page.
• Not only will the portrait Session be absolutely free, but we're also giving parents an additional 10% off any package collections, if they wish to place an order.

A peek into our first round of "Little Models!"

"Little Models" runs from now until the end of June. It's half-price children's Sessions, featuring an extra variety of different backgrounds and outfit changes. It's the only time of the year we offer such a different mix for such a low price, so book now while the sun of Calotype savings is smiling upon us... :)

It's Time Again for "Little Models!"

We only do this once a year, and it's so much fun! A Session fee is $50 (reg. $100) and includes up to three different outfit changes. We'll move around the camera room, workin' it just like a real model, using a variety of backgrounds. No stiff poses here! Little Models is for children of any age, but we recommend ages 5 and up. (For little toddlers we suggest only one or two outfits, since their attention spans are so short.)

We book up fast, so call quickly! The Session fee is for our creative time only; there are no prints or products included. The Session fee is due to book the Session: we can take all major credit cards over the phone.

It's time to bring home our award-winning children's photography! You will love it!
